Celebrate Mother’s Day with Homemade Fudge + Book

Mother’s Day is a time to honor the women who are giving so much of themselves to raise the next generation right. To every woman who is a mom, grandmother and mother-figure, we celebrate and thank you.

Though moms rarely seek recognition, teaching children that gestures of gratitude go a long way is a lesson that holds value long after childhood. What better way to show Mom we appreciate her than with some delicious homemade fudge? This recipe is simple enough to get little ones involved (and of course, sneaks in a bit of math and science!) and you can get creative and make it your own with simple additions and modifications. Fudge also requires a handful of patience (cooling time) before its sweet reward, and that’s one virtue we can never get enough of!

While you’re waiting for the fudge to set, why not enjoy a good book? We love Trevor Noah’s personal story in the young reader’s adaptation of Born A Crime, which is wonderful for kids ages 8+. Readers will be captivated by his personal struggles of growing up as a half-black half-white child in South Africa under apartheid. In this book dedicated to his mom, a quieter story about his mother’s love, sacrifice and determination emerges which creates a riveting and unforgettable story that’s perfect for Mother’s Day.

Mother’s Day Fudge Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 (14 ounce can) sweetened condensed milk

  • 2 cups semisweet chocolate (or 2 cups of semisweet chocolate bar chocolate broken into pieces)

  • 1 cup milk chocolate chips

  • 2 tablespoons butter

  • 1.5 teaspoons vanilla

Instructions:

  1. Prepare a 9 inch square pan. Spray with cooking oil then line with a piece of plastic wrap. Make sure your plastic wrap goes OVER the sides of your pan so the ends of the plastic work as handles to pull out the fudge once cooled.

  2. Combine all ingredients in a saucepan or microwave safe bowl. Turn on heat and melt. Mix constantly until the mixture is melted. If using the microwave, microwave in 1 minute increments until completed melted.

  3. Work quickly! Take the mixture from the saucepan or bowl and pour into the prepared pan. Chill in the refrigerator for 4 hours or overnight. Cut into squares when cool!

Variations:

  • 1 cup marshmallows

  • 1 cup rainbow sprinkles

  • 1 cup dried fruit of your choice

  • Crush up peppermint sticks or crushed up Oreos and sprinkle on top

Mix the variations into the chocolate mixture once it’s melted and BEFORE you pour it into the pan.
